
Whenever someone asks what are my favourite restaurants in São Paulo are, Maní is always on the list. But I've noticed that paulistanos tend to see it as a veggie restaurant - which is a total misconception. Even if they serve whole-wheat penne and beet risotto, many dishes contain meat and fish. Want proof? Here's the current menu:


At lunchtime, the PFs - traditional Brazilian dishes such as rice, beans, steak and fried egg - are hard to beat. Dinner is pricier and more ambitious and the tasting menu definitely has tecnoemotional touches here and there. Chef-owner is ex-model Helena Rizzo, who runs the kitchen with her partner-hubby Daniel Redondo, previously of El Celler de Can Roca.
This Saturday I tried their “especial” martini, made with tequila, pink peppercorns, passion fruit and banana liqueur. It may sound cloyingly sweet, but isn't at all...
